You have to do most of your uploading such as CAM stuff and channel lists via a USB key, which can be a bit fiddly, but youll probably not have to do that often.Welcome to the Digital Spy forums.

The Openbox S9 is occasionally recommended on here and elsewhere, but after a fair amount of web-searching Im confused about whats on the market. I wonder if anyone who owns one (or sells or installs them) can help 1. Who actually makes these boxes Ive read several warnings about avoiding clones, but who makes the originals, and who stocks them And who makes the clones, and who stocks them 2. Surely theres some difference that would make you want one rather than another If so, what is it If not, why can you still get all the models, from the same stockists, at more or less the same price 4. Are they stable and reliable Especially when making timed recordings on to an external (powered, not flash) hard disk drive. Will they work with the standard EPG for the German channels on Astra 1 at 19.2 East I realize thats a lot of questions, and Id be really very grateful to anyone who makes the effort to answer even some of them. Can anyone suggest anything else I dont mind paying a little more than the dirt-cheap Openboxes if it would buy some reliability. A dependable FTA HD box with USB PVR and Astra 1 EPG support is all Im after. At the moment Ive gone back to the old analogue box -- thats never crashed on me in 15 years -- but of course its going to stop working in three months. Openbox /Skybox Models Lan Sharing Tool Manual Recording OfThanks Steve. Do you use the PVR function (especially timer recording, not just manual recording of live TV), and if so, do you use a Flash disk or an external hard disk drive, and is it reliable. I rarely record apart from the occasional UFC and WWE shows but these are recorded using timer and it hasnt let me down yet. ![]() Alan, Id definitely recommend an Openbox Ive got an S9 and I have friends with the S10 - no complaints. I had two Dreamboxes (500 800) which were blown by a knackered motor and Id have to say that I prefer the Openbox. Its dead easy to set-up, its quick to boot up and change channel. ![]() ![]() Openbox /Skybox Models Lan Sharing Tool Full EPG OnIve used it for a few timers and it seems OK - I havent used that function a lot, but because there isnt a full EPG on most channels, you tend to have to manually program it for specific times, rather than selecting a program from the EPG and telling it to record. To compare it to the Dreamboxes, its a lot simpler and not as modable as the DMs. Having said that, my experience has been that the add-ons tend to make the DMs cluttered and clunky and cause most of your problems. The Openbox hardly ever crashes (unlike the DMs) and new firmwares are added all the time, which tend to iron out any little issues.
